Starting point: Castel Rigone
Time required: 03:40 h
Length: 14.68 km
Degree of difficulty: medium
The route departs from the main square in the centre of Castel Rigone and leads you through the streets of the town towards its western walls. You walk along the belvedere and then descend towards Rigonella. From here, the track goes downhill, skirting meadows and scrubland composed mainly of turkey oaks, downy oaks, juniper, arbutus and Spanish broom. You come to the built-up area of Poggio and, keeping the village on your right, head downhill until you come to the main road linking Castel Rigone and Lisciano Niccone.
You need to cross the road, and follow the signs which take you along a narrow road that flanks the tree-lined side of the hill, separating it from the cultivated land and pastures of Pian di Marte. You bear left and start to climb up to Torre di Fiume (424 metres a.s.l.), which you reach after a few bends in the road. After a brief stop near the old tower, you take the path to the left, heading uphill into woods of Turkey oaks and hornbeams. Towards the summit, around the Torre Civitella area, you will come to an area of pastureland, dotted with stands of broom used by charcoal-burners, and by thick patches of heather and cistus.
You then bear left on the wide unpaved road along the ridge and go through the village of Trecine, enjoying breath-taking views of the lake and the hills around it. From here, you take the paved road shaded by ancient pines, which leads back to Castel Rigone. It includes a brief deviation: a short unpaved section, heading downhill, in the area around Galluzzo.
